Ahmed Mansoor is known as part of the UAE Five, which is five Emirati activists who were imprisoned from April to November 2011 on charges of insulting President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice Persident Mohammed bi Rashid Al Maktoum, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Mansoor was arrested for signing a pro-democracy petition. Mansoor is an engineer, blogger, and member of Human Rights Watch Middle East and North Africa Advisory Committee. He advocates for an elected parliament in the UAE. He has been the most publicly outspoken Emirati critic of the arbitrary detention and inhuman treatment of 61 peaceful dissidents with ties to a UAE-based Islamist group al-Islah.
