Hawa Abdi Dhiblawe
Mogadishu, Somalia -
Hawa Abdi Dhiblawe, born in 1947, is a Somali human rights activist and physician. She is the founder and chairperson of the non-profit organization Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation (DHAF). Dhiblawe received a scholarship from the Women's Committee of the Soviet Union in 1964. She subsequently studied medicine at a Kiev institution and graduated in 1971. The next year, she began law studies at Mogadishu's Somali National University. Using her medical skills, Dhiblawe provides shelter, water and medical care to mostly women and children. Zamzam Abdullahi
, Somalia -
Zam Zam Adbullahi has been a human rights activist in Somalia for many years. In addition to being the capacity building officer for Coalition for Grassroots Women Organizations (COGWO), she is the Chairperson of the Somali branch of the African network for prevention and Protection of child abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN). She advocates for women's rights in Somalia. She also wants to empower women by providing them better access to education. Abdullhai left Somalia in July of 2008 following threats against her life because of her work as a human rights activist. She also works with women survivors of violence and has exposed and documented human rights abuses against civilians.
