Comfort M. Freeman

Comfort M. Freeman is a peace activist in Liberia. She is head of the Liberian Women's Initiative for Peace, and anti-war women's group and the Lutheran Church Women's Committee. She was also part of a delegation of church leaders who visited the U.S. in 2003. She organized the Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET), which joined forces with the Liberian Muslim Women's Organization to form the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace. They became a political force against violence and against their government during the Second Liberian Civil War.
 

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
Monrovia, Liberia -
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, born in October 1938, is the 24th and current President of Liberia. She took office on January 16, 2006. She is the first elected female head of state in Africa. She was awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize for her non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work. She studied economics and public policy at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government from 1969 to 1971 and gained a Master of Public Administration. Photo courtesy of Wikipedia
 

Leymah Roberta Gbowee
Monrovia, Liberia -
Leymah Roberta Gbowee, born in 1972, is a Liberian peace activist responsible for leading a women's peace movement that helped bring an end to the Second Liberian Civil War in 2003. She was awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize for her non-violent struggle for the safety of women and women's rights to full participation in peace-building work. She studied and worked her way towards obtaining her associate of art degree in 2001. She received her Master of Arts in Conflict Transformation in 2007 from Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia. She is the founder and president of Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa based in Monrovia, which provides educational and leadership opportunities to girls, women and the youth in Liberia.
